Young people from the Pembroke Dock area have been learning bushcraft and climbing skills during half term activity days sponsored by the Port of Milford Haven.

Almost thirty participants spent two action-packed days at Llanion Cove where they enjoyed tackling an indoor climbing wall followed by outdoor sessions where they built shelters and made fires from scratch.

Hollie Phillips, Community Engagement Assistant at the Port of Milford Haven, said “This was a fantastic couple of days for everyone who took part. Many of the young people were taken out of their comfort zone, but they embraced the activities and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.” She added “We felt it was important to offer something fun and educational for the youth of Pembroke Dock during the school holidays and are really pleased that the sessions went so well.”

Some of the comments received included “I climbed to the top and never thought I would be able to do that” and “We built our shelter just before the rain came and it was awesome.”

Sean Golder from Llanion Cove co-ordinated and delivered the activities with his team. He commented “It was great to see all of the children be so enthusiastic. They loved the climbing wall and what young person doesn’t enjoy building fires and eating marshmallows?! It was lovely to work with the Port of Milford Haven and hope that we can do more together in the future.”

The participants were identified by Pembrokeshire Youth Service who are based at Ysgol Harri Tudur. Suzanne Moses, School Based Youth Worker, is delighted with how the sessions went: “The half term activities provided an opportunity for young people to learn to play safely and make the most of the free activities right on their doorstep. Outdoor learning not only changes lives, but also helps support the development of young people’s social, emotional and physical wellbeing through adventure and engagement with the natural environment."
