Due to the hot weather, leisure vessel owners are reminded of their responsibilities for safe navigation around pontoons and berthing structures.
- MARINERS ARE HEREBY ADVISED that, incidents have been reported involving young people jumping, diving, and swimming in the water around all waterway pontoons and berthing facilities.
- The presence of persons in the water within manoeuvring areas creates a significant safety hazard for both those in the water and vessels navigating to and from pontoons.
- Leisure craft operators should ensure that they minimise impediments to visibility when manoeuvring, as this may impact their ability to see swimmers or react in sufficient time to avoid a collision.
- All leisure craft operators are reminded that they remain responsible for the safe navigation and conduct of their vessels at all times, and that they should proceed at a safe speed, maintain a lookout by sight and hearing, and be prepared to stop or take avoiding action if persons are observed in the water.
- Parents, guardians, and responsible adults are requested to ensure that children and young persons understand the dangers associated with entering the water in active berthing and navigation areas.
- Admiralty Chart 3274, 3275 and IMRAY Y26 and 2600 Atlas refer.
