Due to the hot weather, leisure vessel owners are reminded of their responsibilities for safe navigation around pontoons and berthing structures.

  1. MARINERS ARE HEREBY ADVISED that, incidents have been reported involving young people jumping, diving, and swimming in the water around all waterway pontoons and berthing facilities.
  2. The presence of persons in the water within manoeuvring areas creates a significant safety hazard for both those in the water and vessels navigating to and from pontoons.
  3. Leisure craft operators should ensure that they minimise impediments to visibility when manoeuvring, as this may impact their ability to see swimmers or react in sufficient time to avoid a collision.
  4. All leisure craft operators are reminded that they remain responsible for the safe navigation and conduct of their vessels at all times, and that they should proceed at a safe speed, maintain a lookout by sight and hearing, and be prepared to stop or take avoiding action if persons are observed in the water.
  5. Parents, guardians, and responsible adults are requested to ensure that children and young persons understand the dangers associated with entering the water in active berthing and navigation areas.
  6. Admiralty Chart 3274, 3275 and IMRAY Y26 and 2600 Atlas refer.
