Almost 300 pupils from six Pembrokeshire schools have taken to the water as part of the Port of Milford Haven’s education programme, enjoying a series of boat trips along the Milford Haven Waterway.
Delivered in partnership with Pembrokeshire Outdoor Schools, the trips provided Year 4 pupils with a unique opportunity to learn about water safety, the local marine environment and the diverse wildlife that inhabits the Waterway.
The participating schools were Pennar Community School, Cleddau Reach VC School, Golden Grove School in Pembroke, Milford Haven Community Primary School and Monkton Priory Community Primary School.
Emily Jones, Engagement Executive at the Port of Milford Haven, joined the pupils during the trips and highlighted the importance of providing hands-on learning experiences:
“It was fantastic to see the children enjoying time on the water while learning new facts about the environment, wildlife and water safety. The Port is committed to creating opportunities for young people to access to new experiences, develop their knowledge and build confidence around the Waterway. This project has been a wonderful way to support those aims while helping pupils connect with the unique environment on their doorstep.”

“It was a pleasure to facilitate the waterway boat trips with the Port of Milford Haven and the local schools to the River Cleddau, taking learning beyond the classroom and bringing the curriculum to life. The engagement and enthusiasm from the students and teachers highlights the success of these fantastic trips.”
The programme ran alongside a complementary community initiative funded by the Port, which enabled more than 200 Year 8 pupils from the Milford Haven and Pembroke Dock areas to experience the Waterway through educational boat trips. As well as enjoying time on the water, students gained valuable insights into the wide range of career opportunities, hearing directly from local industry professionals about their roles, experiences and career pathways.
In 2025, the Port invested £426,000 in community activity that encourages the safe and enjoyable use of the Waterway, builds a skilled and confident community with particular emphasis on young people, and supports a sustainable and resilient environment.
