As part of National Apprenticeship Week, a nationwide celebration of the positive impact apprenticeships make on individuals, businesses, and communities, we’re shining a spotlight on our own future talent by catching up with each of our four apprentices. Read below to hear from Isaac Noyce - Apprentice ICT Technician.

What made you want to apply for an apprenticeship?

After completing my GCSEs, I knew an apprenticeship was the route I wanted to take. I’ve always been interested in IT, and I realised early on that learning directly from people who work in the industry every day would give me a depth of knowledge I could never get solely from the classroom. Two of my A level teachers encouraged me to pursue an apprenticeship, and when this opportunity came up, I applied straight away. IT apprenticeships aren’t always the most common path, but for me, it felt like the perfect fit.

What’s been your favourite project or task so far, and why?

One of my favourite tasks has been working on rolling out a major update package, something I’m involved in right now. I led the research into how it could be done, and it’s been really rewarding. The update allows us to refresh everyone’s laptops remotely, which is a huge benefit to the business.

I spent hours exploring different approaches, and it really helped me understand how IT operates in a real organisational environment, compared to learning about how computers work behind the scenes in school. It’s been a great hands‑on challenge.

Has your apprenticeship changed the way you see your future career?

Yes. I am looking to do a degree apprenticeship, and then I would like to progress my career further in networking. Before I started here, I didn’t know what type of IT I wanted to do but since being here I have spoken to my colleagues and learned about networking and cyber security.

What advice would you give someone considering an apprenticeship?

Apply. Nothing bad is going to happen if you just apply. There is no harm in starting.

If you could describe your apprenticeship experience in three words, what would they be?

Interesting. Educational. Fun.

Would you recommend this way of learning and working to others?

Absolutely. It’s an amazing opportunity and a great way to gain real hands‑on experience. Apprenticeships give you a blend of on‑the‑job learning, revision, and essays, so although there’s a lot to juggle, it’s still a really positive balance. My colleagues are always supportive and make space for me to complete my apprenticeship work alongside my daily tasks.

Being based at the Port has given me experiences I never would have had if I’d only followed a traditional classroom-based route into IT. I’ve been out on the Milford Haven Waterway, seen how a complex and multi‑faceted business operates, and gained valuable real‑world experience that’s boosted both my skills and confidence.
