The Milford Haven Waterway and Pembrokeshire’s coastline are fabulous places to explore by boat. And on a warm summer day, there are few better ways to pass the time. Brian Mcfarlane is the Port’s Water Ranger and he is lucky enough to be regularly out on the water during the season. Brian’s perfect for the job – he knows the Waterway inside out and is always ready with a friendly word or piece of advice, should it be needed.
There is, however, a very serious side to Brian’s role; he, with the rest of the Port’s Marine team, work continually to keep users safe on the waterway. Brian explains “The Waterway is an incredible place to explore and on big tide weekends it is possible to reach Cresswell Quay, Carew, Pembroke and even Haverfordwest (but make sure you check your tide times and your charts). You can download the tide tables here or search for specific dates here. Alternatively copies of the Port's tide table are available free of charge in stores around the whole of Pembrokeshire. They include a copy of the Leisure User Guide.
We also always advise people to carry navigation lights (it’s easy to get caught on the water after dark) and, as tempting as it may be, to not indulge in an alcoholic drink. There is a waterway byelaw that means it is illegal to navigate while drunk so, like on land, you could be prosecuted. Besides, it’s incredible dangerous – for the driver, the passenger and for other waterway users.”
Brian is looking forward to another great season and will, as always, be happy to help if you need assistance or have any queries. He’ll be in a new vessel this year, marked PATROL, so give him a wave if you need help or just to say hello. You can also call for the Water Ranger on VHF Channel 16 or VHF Channel 12 – or call 01646 696100 (or email firstname.lastname@example.org).
