Engineering - Repairing the Past, Preparing for the Future

The Authority's Engineering Division has recently undergone a process of consolidation, both in terms of the works previously commenced, and the formalisation of the Division's new structure. The Engineering team are successfully laying the foundations for the Organisation's long-term strategy, outlining a clear focus for the short and medium term planned scheduling of infrastructure repair and maintenance.
Such focus continues to gather momentum, with comprehensive condition surveys being completed across the Authority's Estate. In addition, major works contracts, such as the repair and maintenance of parts of the Milford Docks infrastructure, have recently been completed, with the use of innovative systems. Further similar works are planned over the next few years to maintain the full operational capability of the Docks and Dry Dock.
Other major projects managed by the Division include the successful completion of the refurbishment of the Western Sunderland Hangar at Pembroke Port - the second of two Grade II Listed structures to have been refurbished by the Authority. The project is further proof of the Engineering Division's ability to successfully secure financial support through funding streams such as the European Regional Development Fund ‘Objective One' programme, and Heritage Lottery Funding through the Pembroke Dock Townscape Heritage Initiative.
Presently, the Division continues to focus on finalising all condition surveys and the consequent planning of maintenance/repair contracts to ensure that the ongoing operational needs of the Marine and Commercial Divisions are met. The Authority's long-term operational strategy will be aided by the development of a comprehensive Geographical Information System (GIS) which will allow full and instant access to all records held by the Division. The GIS is also expected to increase efficiencies to other parts of the Authority as its fully capabilities are developed.
Initiated as a result of the need to understand and improve the Authority's environmental footprint, examination of current energy supply is under review and evaluation and steps being taken will also have a commercial benefit. Renewable energy sources are also being considered as an alternative to "grid" supply.
